THIS IS AMERICA: ANNOUNCING THE 2017 GOOD FOOD AWARDS FINALISTS

San Francisco, CA (November 14, 2016) – The Good Food Awards could not be more proud to announce the 291 Finalists of 2017, representing not just the best of America’s growing food movement, but the best of America. At a time when the values our country stands for are in question, they exemplify all that is right from coast to coast: our proud immigrant history, stewardship of a rich and fertile agricultural landscape, a spirit of innovation and the daily choice to balance personal gain with the wellbeing of the commons.

Representing 14 categories and 38 states, all Finalists rose to the top in a blind tasting of the 2,059 entries from nearly every state and passed a rigorous vetting to confirm they met specific Good Food Awards standards around environmentally sound agriculture practices, good animal husbandry, sourcing transparency and responsible relationships throughout the supply chain. Amongst their ranks are Nadia Hubbi in California, a Muhammara crafter keeping her Syrian family’s tradition alive; Nacxitl Gaxiola in Brooklyn, whose company was created to honor the traditional salsas, moles, escabechese and adobes of Mexico; Paul Lieggi in Oregon working with the fishermen and women of the Nez Perce, Umatilla, Yakima and Warm Springs tribes to source hoop caught Chinook Salmon for his aromatic hardwood smoked salmon; and Ann and Dan Trudel, a husband and wife farmer and preserver growing and pickling organic brussels sprouts in the heart of rural Ohio. These 291 Finalists - and the hundreds of farmers, ranchers, fishermen and colleagues they collaborate with - are actively building the sort of world we want to live in.

The 200 Good Food Award Winners will be announced Friday, January 20, 2017, at a gala Awards Ceremony at the historic Herbst Theater in the San Francisco War Memorial, on the same stage where the United Nations charter was signed, and will be followed by two more days of celebration. Medals will be bestowed by renowned chef and activist Alice Waters and organics pioneer Nell Newman, tipping their hats to these exceptional food producers. A reception with the winning food and drink will follow the ceremony, offering both regional ‘tasting plates’ and small bites created by local chefs. A limited number of tickets are available to join the Winners and their families at the ceremony and reception ($120 here).

Imbibe Magazine: A is for Apple

12 hard ciders that score a serious dose of deliciousness.

Sweet. Tart. Sparkling. Still. Styles of hard ciders vary as much as the knobby bittersweet apples from which they’re made, and it’s this versatility that makes them so appealing. Produced in apple-rich regions around the globe—from Spain’s Basque region to the French countryside and from the Pacific Northwest to New England—we’ve assembled a bushel of hard ciders that offer a global perspective on this universally delicious drink.

Whitewood Cider Old Fangled
Washington

A mix of Washington-grown heirloom apples flavor this dry cider from newly launched Whitewood. Expect bright citrus flavors balanced by subtle tannins and a kick of black pepper spice. For now distribution is limited to Washington State, but future plans call for extending into other states.

Serious Eats: The Best Ciders We Tried at Washington Cider Week 2013

20130911-266023-WACiderWeek-7.jpg

From article slideshow, slide #2

We've had our eye on Olympia's Whitewood Cider Co. since they started making cider last fall. They even made our list of 2013 Cider Makers to Watch. So we were excited to find that David and Heather's ciders exceeded our expectations. Of their three inaugural ciders, our favorite was the Northland Traditional Blend. The Northland's fuller blend of traditional cider apples combines all the complexity, acidity, and tannins of a traditional English cider with enough body to attract a diverse range of drinkers. This may be our new choice to convert the uninitiated into the world of cider.

The Stranger: Oktoberfest for Apples

Article excerpt:

Washington Cider Week Wants to Put Its Stuff in Your Mouth

David White, founder of Olympia's Whitewood Cider, doesn't have his own orchard—he buys his apples from nearby—but he's a hardcore cidermaker who was key in founding the Northwest Cider Association. His ciders have good acid and a nice spice. My favorite, the Northland Traditional cider, tastes baroque. It's a medium-dry, European-style cider whose appley flavor spreads across the tongue in tendrils, followed by a honeyed finish that lingers. It's like a goddamn electric symphony playing in your mouth, and you should BYOBabyback ribs.

Wasabi Prime: Wasabi in Ciderland

Excerpt from Wasabi Prime's blogpost:

A local Washington cider I particularly enjoyed was the Northland Traditional Blend from Whitewood Cider Company. They've got three different ciders, and they range from clean, crisp sweetness to a more complex fruit flavor, like the Northland. It's a reminder of how multi-dimensional an apple's flavor is -- sweet, fresh, bitter, with notes of honey and an almost savory quality that the dryness of ciders pick up.

Drink local Whitewood Cider during Washington Cider Week - 08/20/2013

Whitewood Cider, the South Sound's very own producer of craft cider, is getting well-deserved nationwide attention for their traditionally made, seasonal ciders made in Olympia. Their three cider blends - Old Fangled, The South Sounder and Northland Traditional - each have their own distinct flavor and character.

Though David White and his partner Heather Ringwood released their first cider blends mere months ago, Whitewood Cider has been a long time in the making. White became fascinated with craft cider long before it gained the popularity it has today, attending a cider making class and trying his hand at making cider, eventually winning the Cascade Brewers Cup.

Cideries burst with Flavor - The Olympian 10/21/2011

Editor's Note: This is an oldie for sure. I spoke with Craig way back as I was beginning my licensing process.  Seems like a million years ago and yesterday all at once.

- David White

If your only experience with hard cider is that treacly beverage sold in the supermarket, it’s time to head north to Port Townsend to see why this cool beverage is suddenly very hot.

Fall might be spreading its quiet blanket over the Northwest, but apple juice is just beginning to flow at three craft cideries.

The Port Townsend area has suddenly become a nucleus for alcoholic cider production. And cider itself has become popular with the same crowds who populate craft breweries and distilleries.

It comes in a range of flavors, nuances and sweetness levels that leave Strongbow, Hornsby and other mass producers in the apple bin.

Olympia’s Dave White is a founding member of the Northwest Cider Association and runs the craft cider website,  oldtimecider.com. White said Washington has gone from two licensed cideries to 11 in just a few years. He’s going to up that number by one when he opens his own cidery in the spring.

White attributes the increase in popularity to several factors: the state’s apple culture, better education on cider-making methods, increased visibility on store shelves, the desire for an alternative to beer and the nature of cider itself.

“It’s a long drink like a beer, but with more of the complexities of wine,” White said.
